Rising Literacy Rates in India for Women, is this a problem?

According to the Census of India 2011 the gender gap between males and females have decreased since the last census that was taken in 2001. There are now more women who are literates than men in all of India. Both men and women literates have risen since 2001. This can be attributed to the fact that education for both sexes have risen and are continuing to rise. The report that was published with the Census of India stated, "This trend of rising female literates will have far reaching consequences on the development of society."
What does this mean? How can this reach consequences for society? In order to get women our of poverty, including their children, value needs to be put on women who are achieving their educational and career goals. For both men and women, being literate is overall, beneficial for society.

Fighting for What is RIGHT: Why condoning Rape is NOT okay!

There was a recent article that was published in my schools newspaper titled, ''False Advertising Leads to Power-Based Relationships,'' which condones rape. The senior reporter is basically saying that men do not know what the word 'no' really means and women are playing these mind games that teaches men these dysfunctional behaviors which therefore, justifies rape. The senior reporter also uses phrases such as 'some women, some men, certain men, men, women' which is really generalizing men and women here at EWU. Isn't our school newspaper suppose to represent our student body?

This article was in the Eagle Life: Culture on Campus section. This article is CLEARLY an opinion and was not even in the opinion section of the newspaper. The article was also published in the 'humpday quickie' weekly column which is offensive in itself.

These kinds of statements and generalizations is unacceptable. It does not represent who EWU is and what our culture is. I and my WMST Capstone class have been going around getting signatures to a letter we wrote last week. The letter basically states that this should not be in our newspaper and how condoning rape and justification of rape because the word NO isn't clearly defined is wrong. If anyone would like to sign this letter it is due by 1pm Monday, April 25th, please contact me immediately! If anyone cannot get a hold of me, your signatures can be captured in the Women and Gender Studies Department and ask the secretary about getting info and you would like to sign. If you will not be here Monday and would like to contact the Easterner, please feel free to write a letter to the editor. Thank you for your support.

Where are the Girls?

http://www.economist.com/blogs/dailychart/2011/04/indias_sex_ratio?fsrc=scn%2Ffb%2Fwl%2Fdc%2Fsonsdaughters

There is a major decline in girls aged 0-6 in India. The population as a whole has been rising at a steady rate however, there are approximately 914 girls to every 1000 males. This trend can be correlated with mothers finding out that they are having girls. Because of the preference for sons, early detection has played a negative role for young female girls. The article states that in China, by the year 2020, there will be 5 males for every 1 female, this will be difficult for men when they are trying to find a spouse. What should India do? How can India reverse this negative steady decline of girls?
