Fighting for What is RIGHT: Why condoning Rape is NOT okay!

There was a recent article that was published in my schools newspaper titled, ''False Advertising Leads to Power-Based Relationships,'' which condones rape. The senior reporter is basically saying that men do not know what the word 'no' really means and women are playing these mind games that teaches men these dysfunctional behaviors which therefore, justifies rape. The senior reporter also uses phrases such as 'some women, some men, certain men, men, women' which is really generalizing men and women here at EWU. Isn't our school newspaper suppose to represent our student body?

This article was in the Eagle Life: Culture on Campus section. This article is CLEARLY an opinion and was not even in the opinion section of the newspaper. The article was also published in the 'humpday quickie' weekly column which is offensive in itself.

These kinds of statements and generalizations is unacceptable. It does not represent who EWU is and what our culture is. I and my WMST Capstone class have been going around getting signatures to a letter we wrote last week. The letter basically states that this should not be in our newspaper and how condoning rape and justification of rape because the word NO isn't clearly defined is wrong. If anyone would like to sign this letter it is due by 1pm Monday, April 25th, please contact me immediately! If anyone cannot get a hold of me, your signatures can be captured in the Women and Gender Studies Department and ask the secretary about getting info and you would like to sign. If you will not be here Monday and would like to contact the Easterner, please feel free to write a letter to the editor. Thank you for your support.
